Footprints believed to belong to a crocodile-like prehistoric reptile were found in the Italian Alps in an extraordinary discovery that, according to scientists, proves that there were survivors of a mass extinction 252m years ago.
The first footprints were found in rocks in the area in 2008, and the scientists continued their exploration in the years that followed until they had the complete footprints needed to identify the animal.
"The fossil footprints were found in some sort of very moist sediment that they could be kept in," said Massimo Bernardi, a paleontologist at Muse.
