Moderna is designing a new version of its COVID-19 shot to fight the variant first found in South Africa : worldnews

Moderna has reason to believe that the current The vaccine will work on the South African variant (although the studies on it are finished in vitro(not in real people, so they don't know for sure), but the immunity it creates, while sufficient, is much lower than that of older variants of the virus. The resulting uncertainty, combined with the fact that at this point there are practically more variants that diverge further, is probably the reason why they take this step. I would expect the vaccine to have to be "adjusted" again in the future, with regular new vaccinations.

Here is her press release on the matter and the study on which it is based.
